The BA to MA Accelerated Program in Secondary Education is designed for undergraduates who wish to become secondary teachers in biology, English, history or mathematics. Students earn a BA degree in four years in these content areas and then earn an MA degree in secondary education in the fifth year. Students who successfully complete the accelerated, dual degree program earn a State of Illinois teaching license with an endorsement in biology, English, History or mathematics, grades 9-12.
This five-year program enables biology, English, history and mathematics majors to earn a BA in the academic discipline, an MA in Secondary Education, and become licensed to teach grades 9-12.
By starting the MA in Secondary Education during their final year of undergraduate study, students obtain their teaching license more quickly.
Students can expect focused and practical assignments, engaging discussions and small group projects with intensive field experiences in diverse schools and classrooms. During the final semester, students complete a 15-week student teaching experience at a partner school under the guidance of a mentor teacher and a university supervisor.
