Third Annual Forum on Drug Policy: Friday April 12, 2013

 

Please join us for the Third Annual Forum on Drug Policy - Policy Approaches to Substance Use: Public Safety and Public Health on April 12th from 2pm to 5pm. Following the forum, a networking reception with light refreshments will be served from 5pm to 6pm.  

 

This year we will discuss the sustainability of existing U.S drug policy models in the United States and internationally and examine public health solutions designed to address the opioid overdose crisis.

Panel One: 2:15pm to 3:15pm

The Sustainability of U.S. Drug Policies in the United States and Abroad

This interactive panel will focus on U.S. and international drug policies in Eurasia and Portugal and the sustainability of existing policy models. Followed by a brief audience Q&A.

Moderator: Kathleen Kane-Willis, Director, Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy at Roosevelt University

Panelists:

  • Dr. Dessa Bergen-Cico, Assistant Professor, Syracuse University, Department of Public Health.
  • Dr. James A. Swartz, Associate Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago, Jane Addams College of Social Work and author of “Substance Abuse in America: A Documentary and Reference Guide” (2012)

Informational Presentation: 3:30pm to 4:00pm

An Introduction to Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND)

Presenter Maya Doe-Simkins will provide background information on overdose prevention initiatives and strategies. She will discuss the factors that can lead to an overdose event, the symptoms of an opioid overdose, what can happen during an overdose event, and how laypersons and bystanders can provide emergency medical assistance during an overdose.


Panel Two: 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Public Safety Personnel and Public Health Solutions to Reduce Overdose Deaths

This interactive panel will focus on public health solutions designed to address the opioid overdose crisis and ways in which municipal, county and state stakeholders can collaborate to promote these solutions. Followed by a brief audience Q&A.
