Online Tutoring

How to Join an Online Session

Online appointments usually require two days to schedule. Online tutoring appointment hours are flexible, set up on an individual basis to fit your schedule (nights and weekends are possible).  Email us at writingcenter@roosevelt.edu or call us at (312) 341-2206 to set up an online tutoring appointment.

Why online tutoring?

Here at Roosevelt University's Writing Center, we understand that not all students have the time or opportunity to get into our center at AUD 442. To help those writers who cannot come in, we offer online tutoring.  We host an online chat space through our community space on Blackboard where student writers can meet with student tutors to discuss their writing assignments. The online chat space allows for the tutor and the writer to converse about the paper in real-time, just as if they were meeting in the Writing Center itself. This process is convenient for both the tutor and the student because each can work from any computer, and the process also encourages the dialogue that we, at the Writing Center, believe produces better writing.

A Note to Writers About Online Sessions

The Writing Center would love for things to run as smoothly as possible for online sessions. To help with this process, we would appreciate if writers asking for online assistance would read this before entering a session.

Just like sessions held in AUD 442, we ask that both parties show up for the appointment on time. It would be helpful if writers logged into the chat space before the appointment in order to avoid any problems at the scheduled time of the appointment.  Click here for instructions on how to locate and join the online tutoring space on Blackboard.  Should problems arise, please feel free to e-mail or call the Writing Center and we will do our best to troubleshoot your problems.

If the piece of writing you will be discussing with the tutor is longer, please consider requesting an appointment a few days in advance and attach your paper so that the tutor you will be working with can have a chance to read the paper prior to the session. Sessions are set to be 50 minutes long and we would like to use as much of that time collaborating with the writer rather than reading the assignment.

When e-mailing the Writing Center to set up an appointment, also include a brief description of the assignment and a list of things you would like to work on during the session.

We look forward to working with you!
