Roosevelt University’s Jazz Studies Program is hosting a series of clinics and master classes this spring that provide tremendous opportunity for students to learn hands on from leading musicians and experts in the jazz field.

The Spring 2012 series of clinics and master classes, which is already underway, will  include appearances by: Chicago’s legendary Jazz Showcase club owner Joe Segal, originally scheduled for Feb. 21, has been postponed with further information coming soon on a new date and time; jazz fusion guitarist Larry Coryell, formerly of the Gary Burton Quartet and Larry Coryell & the Eleventh House on Feb.24; pianist, harmonica player, multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy (pictured above), founding member of Bela Fleck and the Fleckstones and winner of a 2012 Grammy award for  best instrumental composition on Feb. 28; jazz critic Neil Tesser, author of The Playboy Guide to Jazz, on March 6; Wilco drummer, percussionist and composer Glenn Kotche on March 20; and Steve Rodby, bassist and producer for the Pat Metheny Group, on April 5.

“We’re bringing in world-class artists that have a lot of expertise to share with our students,” said Paul Wertico, head of jazz at Roosevelt’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Nat Schwartz, an undergraduate jazz studies major and drummer, believes the Spring 2012 series offers an opportunity for real-world experience and a chance to express true passion for jazz and jazz greats. “This series is teaching us how to work hard and yet to be realistic about making it in the field of jazz today,” he said.

Seating for the clinics/master classes is extremely limited, with CCPA students receiving first priority to attend.  For information on times and location and/or to reserve a spot, contact Paul Wertico at 312-341-6591 or pwertico@roosevelt.edu.
