Middle Grades Endorsements

Elementary, secondary and special certificates may be endorsed for teaching at the middle grades level. All middle grade endorsements require :

  1. Eighteen (18) semester hours of credit in content area courses*
  2. Three (3) semester hours of coursework in middle school philosophy, curriculum and instructional methods for designing and teaching developmentally appropriate programs in the middle grades, including content area reading instruction
  3. Three (3) semester hours of coursework in educational psychology focusing on the developmental characteristics of early adolescents and the role of the middle grade teacher in assessment, coordination and referral of students to health and social services

Once the above requirements are met, the applicant must submit the following form to the Illinois State Board of Education along with required documents and fees detailed therein.

*Several subjects have a specific distribution of content that must be met before a teacher may obtain these endorsements.
