Event Date: 10/18/2012
4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

During the Spring 2013 semester Professor Chris Chulos will offer Hist 373/473 The Scandinavian Social Welfare State and National Identity about the social welfare state’s impact on the construction of modern national identity. Find out how the Scandinavian welfare state combines market capitalism with a broad social net incorporating a “society first” mentality that enables Scandinavia consistently to occupy the top slots in international rankings of educational achievement, market competitiveness, innovation, egalitarianism, press freedom, and quality of life. A significant component of this course will be a two-week trip (in May) to three Scandinavian cities (Stockholm, Sweden; Turku, Finland; and Helsinki, Finland) and an immersion in contemporary Nordic culture. Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome.
