URBS IN DECO HORTO Julia S. Bachrach on the Chicago Park District Chicago parks experienced tremendous consolidation and growth during the deco period, allowing architects like Edward Bennett and Emanuel Valentine Buchsbaum to engage modern design in the service of citizens. The parks employed sculptors, painters, graphic designers, printers, craftsmen and more. Later, the WPA provided unique opportunities for artists including the development of hand-crafted toy lending libraries (pictured at right). Park District historian and archivist Julia Bachrach will provide an overview of the tremendous Chicago Park District collection, including plans for the future. Ms. Bachrach recently edited and expanded the 2nd edition of her book “City in a Garden: A History of Chicago’s Parks”, which will be available for sale.
