ITS Operating System Policies and Procedures

This document details the policies and procedures related to the acquisition and support of operating systems and upgrades.

Currently supported operating systems:

  • Windows 7
  • Mac Lion
  • Mac Snow Leopard

*Windows 8 is undergoing evaluation and testing. There is currently no scheduled date for its implementation.

Support for versions of Microsoft Windows prior to Windows 7 (e.g., Windows XP, Windows Vista, etc.) has ended.

Acquisition

Operating systems are obtained as part of a computer’s purchase. The operating system that comes pre-installed on the computer (or the image supplied by ITS) will be the only supported operating system for that computer.

Support

ITS will install, or cause to install through scheduling or other automated procedures, patches and other hot fixes released by OS manufacturers.

Upgrades

Upgrades to operating systems will not be installed on Roosevelt computers. Newer versions of operating systems may be rolled-out as part of University-wide initiatives.

Downgrades

The operating system on Mac computers will not be downgraded due to license restrictions.

Windows OS on Mac computers

A dual-boot operating system setup is no longer a setup option. Instead, users can opt to pay for a Parallels license if there is a need to run Windows programs on a Mac.
