Kyong Mee Choi (left), associate professor of music composition at Roosevelt University, will release the multimedia opera, THE ETERNAL TAO, on DVD at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the University’s seventh-floor Ganz Hall, 430 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

Integrating voices, instruments, video, electronics, dancers and lighting, and using a multi-channel sound system with projected visual images, THE ETERNAL TAO made a one-time-only debut in 2010 at the University, receiving rave reviews from music critics who have marveled at its “sense of constant metamorphosis.”

Composed and produced by Choi while she was a prestigious Guggenheim fellow, the unusual premiere that features singers, but not in the predominant roles they have in most operas, as well as a panel discussion analyzing the experimental electronic production, are in the new 90-minute DVD, THE ETERNAL TAO (a scene at right), being released by PARMA Ravello Records.

THE ETERNAL TAO shows us how the human condition can go beyond desire and its manifestation – the point at which many minds get caught - for it is only when you are free of desire that you can see and understand the mystery of life,” said Choi, who derived the multimedia opera’s text from Tao Te Ching, an influential book of poetry written 2,500 years ago by Lao Tzu.

THE ETERNAL TAO places Tzu’s ancient work in a contemporary setting, creating an experience that allows audiences to see themselves, without judgment and with open eyes, for a better understanding of their purpose in the world,” said Choi.
