Posted: 06/21/2013

Tom Philion has been appointed Interim Dean of the College of Education, effective July 1, succeeding Holly Stadler who is joining the Office of the President to support development of the University's accreditation and institutional effectiveness efforts.

An accomplished scholar, professor and academic leader, Tom’s administrative experience and passion for teacher education have prepared him to lead the College forward. Tom joined Roosevelt in 1999 and has been Associate Dean for Academic Affairs since August 2009. During his tenure as Associate Dean, he led the College’s successful NCATE re-accreditation effort and the development of new baccalaureate and master’s degree programs.

Tom’s approach to teaching and leadership is informed by a long-standing scholarly interest in the creative means by which individuals turn adverse educational circumstances into something more optimal and productive. He is the author of more than 15 articles and reports on topics such as teacher research, portfolio pedagogy, oral and written storytelling, collaborative learning and computer-mediated instruction. Tom received his BA from Fordham University and his MA and PhD from the University of Michigan.

“I am looking forward with enthusiasm to working with all faculty and staff in the College of Education and key stakeholders at each campus to enhance teacher, counselor and leader preparation at our University,” Tom said.
