Posted: 09/19/2013

Roosevelt University business student Guadalupe Cotto was awarded the $3,000 Adelante MillerCoors National Scholarship and will be attending the Adelante Annual Leadership Institute Conference on Oct. 19-21 in San Antonio, Texas.

A resident of Chicago’s Garfield Ridge community, Cotto is the first Roosevelt University student to receive this prestigious award.  Cotto is a senior majoring in accounting whose goal is to earn a Master's of Science in Accounting at Roosevelt and work at an accounting firm as a staff accountant. She likes Roosevelt's diverse student body, approachable professors and advisors and small class sizes.

"My dream is to make a difference in someone's life by providing the best accounting services in English and Spanish," said Cotto. "I want to help my clients improve their financial situations.  I would like to serve the disadvantaged, especially Latinos and minorities. As my clients, they can be assured that I would provide ethical services with sound, knowledgeable advice that will help them achieve their own financial goals."

A non-profit organization for Hispanic college students, Adelante aids students with professional and leadership development skills. It has served more than 1,000 students annually through its workshops, scholarships, internships, one-on-one counseling, academic contests, parent programs and services. Applicants for the scholarship must be of Hispanic descent and have exceptional leadership qualities at school and within the community.

“I want to thank Melissa Stutz, assistant dean of the Heller College of Business, for encouraging me to apply for the scholarship,” said Cotto. “I am extremely grateful for caring mentors like her.”

Cotto will attend the Annual Leadership Institute Conference titled “The Elements of Success,” a three-day event that will include guest speakers and a series of networking luncheons that will give students an opportunity to meet with possible employers from such companies as Sherwin Williams, Southwest Airlines and Ford Motor Company.
