How the GPA is Calculated

Roosevelt University assigns quality points to the full value grades, and also to a (+) plus and (-) minus.  They are used in the calculation of the GPA and the academic standing.  Grades preceded by an asterisk (*) are issued for the developmental courses below a 100 level (for example ENG 099 or MATH 099).  They are excluded from earned hours and the calculation of the GPA however, they are included in the total of "Attempted Hours".

Steps in a GPA Calculation

  • Multiply the point value assigned to a grade you received by the number of semester hours for that course.  For example, a grade of an "A" in a three credit hour course equals 12 quality points, a grade of a "B" in a three credit hour course equals 9 quality points, etc.
  • Compute the total number of credit hours attempted including failed courses.  No points are assigned to an "F", but the credit hours of a failed course are counted in computing the GPA.
  • Grades of a "W", "P", "I", and "IP" do not affect the GPA, nor does the CR in transfer credits.
  • To calculate your GPA, divide the total number of quality points by the total number of attempted hours.
  • Your GPA shows a value up to two digits after a decimal point.  The value is cut off and not rounded.
