Bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement or Approval The need for qualified K-12 Bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers continues to increase, and the College of Education offers you a way to prepare for this growing field. In just one year you can complete all of the coursework required to obtain your official endorsement/approval as a bilingual or ESL teacher. Note that these endorsements/approvals can only be added to valid Type 03, Type 04, Type 09 or Type 10 certificates. The coursework we will offer is identical for both the Bilingual Endorsement/Approval and the ESL Endorsement/Approval programs and covers state requirements for both.* The state Bilingual Endorsement/Approval additionally requires a passing score on the state's Target Language Proficiency Exam. *Please note that ESL Endorsement/Approval students who entered the program prior to Spring 2009 may choose to take ECHD 334/434: Language Development in place of EDUC 374/474: Methods and Materials for Teaching Bilingual Students, but that this will only meet state coursework approval for ESL, not Bilingual Endorsement/Approval. ECHD 334/434: Language Development will be offered on Mondays from 4:30-7:00 PM.
Program of Study Courses are offered in Schaumburg on Saturdays from 9:00 AM-3:00 PM during the Fall and Spring terms and on 5 consecutive Saturdays from 9:00-4:30 during the summer. The Saturday courses each Fall and Spring term are offered sequentially, not concurrently, with the first course meeting the first 7 Saturdays of the term and the second course meeting the last 7 Saturdays of the term. The summer courses are offered during separate five-week sessions (see dates in table below). Courses do not have to be taken in a specific sequence and you can begin the program in any term.
Clinical Hours It is a state requirement that students complete 100 clinical hours in bilingual or ESL settings. Individual courses in each program have variable numbers of clinical hours associated with them (see table above). Students may choose to complete any number of hours within the specified range for each course, but it is the student's responsibility to have a total of 100 clinical hours completed and verified by the end of the program. Please note that clinical hours for any course must be completed during the semster in which the course is offered, but can be begun and/or completed outside the 7-week span of the class meetings. Some clinical hours may be waived with a letter from a school principal verifying three months of full-time, successful teaching experience in the area for which the student is seeking endorsement. Additional State Requirements Students seeking the Bilingual Endorsement/Approval must also pass a state language examination in the non-English language to be taught. Students planning to pursue this endorsement are encouraged to take the target language proficiency examination as soon as possible as they will not be able to receive an endorsment from the state without passing it. The ESL Endorsement does not require a language test. Please visit http://www.icts.nesinc.com/ for more information. Students may use their endorsement coursework to complete a Graduate Certificate in Bilingual/ESL Education or as elective credits (12 credits of the 18 credits will be counted) toward a Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership (MATL). An additional six courses (18 semester hours) are required to complete the Master of Arts in teacher Leadership. Please note, to enter the MATL program, you must be a practicing teacher with at least one year of teaching experience. Roosevelt undergraduates and graduate students currently enrolled in another program in the College of Education may also take the Bilingual or ESL sequence of courses towards an endorsement without formally applying to the program.
