Human Services
Counseling and Human Services | College of Education

The Human Service Program has been designed for those individuals who are interested in acquiring a background in counseling foundations, clinical supervision, and competencies in an individualized area of interest but who are not pursuing certification or licensure.

Students are required to take the following courses:
(39 Semester Hours)

Core courses for all students:

  • CHS 400 Foundations in Counseling
  • CHS 401 Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Counseling    
  • CHS 406 Fundamentals of Statistics, Research, and Program Evaluation
  • CHS 411 Social and Cultural Foundations
  • CHS 413 Counseling Theory and Practice
  • CHS 416 Human Appraisal
  • CHS 417 Career and Lifestyle Development
  • CHS 421 Theories and Dynamics of Group Counseling
  • CHS 457 Human Growth and Development

Specialized courses:

  • CHS 426 Pre-Practicum: Techniques and Interventions
  • CHS 427 Practicum: Clinical Practicum in Public and Private
  • Three electives selected with advisor consultation

Practicum and Internship Placements

Practica are located in community agencies which focus on providing services to a select population within the community, such as youth and family services, substance abuse treatment, career counseling, gerontology counseling, and counseling for domestic violence.  (Hours required: 150 hours for practicum)

Licensure

This program does not qualify students for a license or certification.
