The MA in Performing Arts Administration is designed to hone the skills of current and aspiring administrators and to cultivate the next generation of great professionals within the field. Students in this selective program take a broad range of courses in the areas of marketing, public relations, finance, development, entrepreneurship, innovation, community engagement and more. Credit may be given for internships or prior work experience on an individual basis. Course work is taught by current administrators of performing arts organizations across the United States with firsthand knowledge and demonstrated success in the field.
Course work is taught by current administrators of prestigious arts organizations throughout the United States, all of whom have firsthand knowledge and experience in the post-pandemic world of arts management. Seminar guests have included past and current administrators of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Joffrey Ballet, The Dallas Theatre Center, and the Lyric Opera.
At the end of the MA coursework, students are assigned a case study which poses a unique set of challenges. Students are given four weeks to create a written plan of action to address those challenges. The project culminates in an oral presentation and defense of their recommendations before a “Moot Board” of Directors comprised of faculty and guest adjudicators. Students are challenged with real world scenarios and the opportunity to hone their skill set as arts administrators.
MA in Performing Arts Administration students may pursue the degree full-time (completion in one year) or part-time (completion in two years). With the exception of two “mini-residencies” required in the summer sessions, this degree program is entirely online, making it possible for students to work full time both in the Chicago area and across the country.
