Classical Music Today: The Critic’s View
A discussion with music journalist Hannah Edgar, moderated by Dr. Shannon McGinnis
Hannah Edgar is a Chicago-based music writer, editor, researcher, and radio producer. They write about music for The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Reader, and WBEZ, and regularly contribute to ARTnews, The University of Chicago Magazine, and Tone Glow. Previously, they served as assistant digital editor at Chicago magazine and was a contributing writer and editor at The Classical Review, an online publication covering classical music in seven states and metro areas. In radio, Hannah writes and produce stories for WBEZ, most frequently for its culture desk (with previous production credits on Curious City, Nerdette, and Sound Opinions). They have also cut segments for 98.7 WFMT, for whom they still write as a freelancer.
While a student at the University of Chicago, Hannah was deputy editor-in-chief and arts editor of The Chicago Maroon. They are also the writer behind the majority of “The History in This Program” features in the New York Philharmonic’s subscription program books for the orchestra’s 2017–2018 season. Hannah was a 2018 Rubin Institute Fellow, working alongside professional and rising critics in a four-day intensive music criticism program, and a 2019 Bang on a Can Media Fellow, where I covered Loud Weekend for WNYC’s New Sounds.
