About Me
Katherine (Kat) Coyl is a seasoned theatre professional with over 20 years of experience. She started her career at the age of 13 with the Musical Dance Troop "Good Vibes."
She holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the CCPA at Roosevelt University and a Graduate Certification in Intimacy Direction and Coordination from Columbia College. Katherine is also an Advanced Actor Combatant with the SAFD and a recognized Certified Teacher and Fight Director with the ILFDC.
In addition to spending ten seasons as an Actor at Lyric Opera Chicago, Katherine has worked as a choreographer nationally on Opera and Theatre productions, including "Don Giovanni" at Dallas Opera, "Idomeneo" at Lyric Opera Chicago, "The Nose," "The Life and Death(s) of Alan Turing," and "Taking Up Serpents" at Chicago Opera Theater, "Carmen" at Des Moines Metro Opera, and "Athena" at Urbanite Theatre. She recently served as the Assistant Director and Intimacy Coordinator for "Breaking the Waves" at Detroit Opera and will return to teach a Masterclass in movement later this Winter. She will also serve as Intimacy and Fight Director for "Leonora" at the Chicago Opera Theater.
Apart from her career as a performer and choreographer, Katherine has taught movement with a strong focus on acting at National workshops, Resident Artist Programs, local outreach, and the University of Iowa.
Katherine is passionate about collaborating and creating supportive spaces for all artists, empowering them to deliver their best work.
Katherine currently holds the position of the president of the International League of Fight Directors and Choreographers. She is a member of the American Guild of Musical Artists, an associate member of The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and a proud member of the Latinx/Hispanic and Queer communities.
